LOOK AT THIS CHUNGUS
THE BIGGEST ZOIDS MODEL KIT EVER MADE (to date)
Getting this far took 3 days and he STILL isn't done. That cutting mat is 18 inches, btw, for the sake of scale.
MODEL FINISHED!! It's the size of and weighs as much as a cat. I adore him with all my heart.
And here Gojulas is displayed on the Zoids' shelf! He doesn't fit inside but that's fine. He and Cherno Alpha can hang out on top and I might try to pose them into FIGHT positions at some point.
This monster took 5 days to build and I am so pleased to have him finished.

It's late summer and as usual I'm nostalgic for Zoids lmao
Collecting and building Zoids was a huge part of my childhood, and I was wondering if anyone else had that experience as well c:
I still have all my old models, they've been carefully packed away. As for what I've got on display now? Just my Chogokin Liger Zero and my Zoids Aggressive Liger Zero (can you tell what my favorite Zoid was? lmao) I also have the 40th anniversary motorized Liger Zero to build too, but that's for a much later date (when I've moved lol).
#paige chatter#zoids#polls by paige#i'd like to get the liger zero x hmm kit and maybe another base liger (my og hmm liger got knocked off my shelf and broke :c)#i still have two hmm command wolves to build too lmaooo#cannot wait to make my liger plush after i'm done with my current sewing projects ;u;

Finally able to complete this guy!
I had him printed and painted for a while but had no where to put him so he stayed on the floor by my computer for the longest time, collecting dust (you can see how dusty he is in the second pic and a little bit of it in the first one when I tried to dust him off).
We were in much need of a desk upgrade since the ones we were using were 2 decades old (omg...). We had to change the configuration of the layout of the space but I think this works better than how it was before.
This model is pretty huge so it was a struggle to get it set up and allot the space...
Did I sacrifice 1/3 of my desk space to my desk buddy? Heckin yes, but it makes me happy to work on the computer and see him lit up. Even though it's complete, I'm working on making a pseudo hangar around it with some more LEDs and maybe replacing the LED in the tail to be a bit brighter but sizing can only accomplish so much.
So far I'm pretty happy. But I'm out of space since I have more giant Zoids to display...

sequel to a previous readmore
A while back I was talking about my buddy JJ who had just passed. It's been almost six months since then, somehow, which doesn't seem right. I think about him a lot still. Sometimes it's sad thoughts, sometimes it's angry thoughts, but it's usually just, thinking. I think I finally realized that I'm grieving and that I need help, I have a Monday appointment with a new therapist. I've been in and out of therapy for most of my life at this point, for one thing or another, and I've had some really good help, and some downright unhelpful help. Regardless of what this turns out to be, it's free through my employer, and that's what really matters.
I've gone out of town 3-4 times to help clear out his storage unit full of manga, Transformers, and assorted other action figures and robots and such. I've made probably a dozen total dropoffs between the local secondhand toy store, the local hobby store, and a second, slightly less local hobby store. The first location will take most of the standard toys and collectibles, the second, all the unbuilt model kits (I think those are finally cleared out), and the third, all the built model kits (most of those are gone now too). Most of what remains is either part of a massive lot of Transformers, a sizeable number of Kamen Rider figures, or a handful of Diaclone toys I'll have to reunite with their boxes. It sounds like a lot, but it feels extremely manageable compared to what was in there before. Not doing anything else with that for the rest of the year, though, his mother doesn't want to have to think about that during the holidays, and I can't really blame her for that.
Not this weekend, but next weekend, is hopefully going to be a big get-together with the old friend group we used to hang out with. I'm looking forward to it, but definitely dreading it a little too. No idea how that's going to go at all. I'm sure it'll be just fine and it'll be a good time to reminisce and catch up (probably a few people I haven't seen in five years).
I feel increasingly guilty for any part of the estate sale I keep for myself. It's not even a percent of a percent, and his mother even said I could keep whatever I wanted to, but man, don't I have enough crap of my own already? In the latest batch, I held onto a few of the built model kits, but I got rid of even more of my own, just put it in with the rest of the trade-in, so I guess it evens out.
The other thing I've been doing, there's a good number of built non-Gundam kits that I didn't know what else to do with, and I've been setting them up with cool poses and display stands and dropping them at hobby store display cabinets across the state. The big purple Zoids scorpion at the local shop, an Armored Core at another place, Bio Robo and Bio Hunter Silva's mecha, Fighbird and Draias. I think I'm going to run out of hobby stores before I run out of Super Mini-Pla. This weekend I'm going to another Hobbytown, I'm pretty taken with my setup for this one.
(The Japanese reads, approximately, "There Are No Problems In Space". It's a dumb little phrase I came up with when we were taking Japanese together in college.)
Anyway, I've been ignoring work for the last half hour and should probably get back to that, but I feel a little better writing this all down somewhere.

Progress on “StarStabber Zirc”, based on what I know about all the stuff I know goes into a functioning video game
Player design: leaning more and more towards something more interactive than just flying around with the knife always out, but (A) not sure what to replace that with and (B) gonna have to rename the game if I change it to something besides stabbing. It will definitely be a melee attack and not a projectile, but maybe something that requires fuel/ammo, like a taser needing batteries? I still like the gimmick of having eyeballs orbiting you as shields, but I don’t want too many variables to keep track of: health power-ups are a must, so I want eyeballs or ammo, not both. Cash replaces the standard Points, although it feels a bit like if it’s money there need to be item shops to spend it at?
Enemy design: yeah that’s been pretty visible. Haven’t done much animating, but the convenient thing about basing the aesthetic on 90s shmups is that animation can be kept super simplistic--some of the Darius bosses barely moved. At some point I’m going to have to start narrowing it down instead of inventing more (both the enemies and their projectiles), but I don’t think I’m there yet.
Level design: core gameplay is based around the shoot-em-up model, which means most of the level design (besides what enemies are there) could be as simple as a scrolling background, which could be anything--cityscapes, space, fabric textures, anything. I’m still torn between whether it should be as simple as “The Plywood Level” and “The Denim Level” or if it should be something more wacky like “Planet Lumbertron” and “Janet (Jeans Planet)”. Previous posts have included crystal caves and a Pac-Man-esque maze, which will still be the case either way. Yeah there might be some simple puzzling involved, but look at the image above, you can tell exactly what you need to do, right?
Music: inspired by Parodius’ techno remixes of classical music, it’s MIDI versions of ragtime piano set to beats from Freesound.org
Sound effects: Itch.io’s collection of royalty-free sound effects, Wikimedia’s audio collection, my collection of old keyboards and musical instruments, and at least one type of gun will just be me going “bang!” Other suggestions are welcome
Plot/dialog: yeah we don’t do that here. Okay, maybe a LITTLE since it’s what people seem to want from games, but the overall plot is “a bad space overlord has a bunch of bad space monsters and you play as a severed hand strapped to a jet engine” and I’m not planning any twists or character development; Generalissimo Zaffre Repugnante of Planet Slime-o-Zoid is just a horrible person that hates freedom or coolness or conscious thought or whatever. Any cutscenes are going to be simple and/or skippable, but it would be pretty hilarious to use that old “still image of the characters that looks better than anything in-game” style and hire a professional animator to do a couple, maybe as like Kickstarter stretch goals or something

Found an old photo of my Zoids toy/model collection from 2008, real throwback.
Most of these were the old Tomy/Hasbro wind-up suckers. Which were great because they were model kits you put together, but they were also simple enough that I could put them back together easily when I would smash them together in mock battles. Which I did. a lot.

Wrathful Beast
"One does not cross the DCU and leave unscathed. With the temperament of a tiger and a lion's roar, the sight of this Shield Liger charging forward on the battle field is enough to make foes turn tail and run. However, it is already too late. Once you are in this Zoid's sights, it will not let you leave so easily."

While out on my adventure today, I collected some things!
My first model kit (of adulthood...i may have had a Zoids model kit as a kid? Not sure. I remember wanting one really bad and I remember having a white liger toy and a raptor that may have been a toy or may have been a kit) and my first Call of Cthulhu books!

This thing is hugeeee!
When I was pretty young, I had a modest Zoids collection. Basically any Zoid I could get my hands on I would build. Then I discovered a site (Metal Machine Music???) that listed a couple of Zoids and I grew obsessed with the "Death Stinger". Basically anywhere we went, I was always on the hunt for this guy. Then it became an obsession and anywhere we went, I would scour the aisles for it. Unfortunately, little me didn't realize it wasn't released in the US until much later.
Mom was pissed but the moment we spotted it (months later...) she threatened to kill me if I didn't get it.
My old Zoids collection is pretty much gone now though I've started to somewhat rebuild it. The first thing I got when I moved away for college was the same Death Stinger model after scouring ebay. Then the HMM line came out.
The pink and maroon model is the HMM line, the blue and white is a bootleg Super Nova, while the largest one is the one I modeled and 3D printed myself. I made some changes to the model based on both designs and added a few details like little spikes on the leg guards and on the visor/helmet. I also changed the cannon on its back and tail to something I more enjoy. The tips of the "feet" are now pointed and I added more "rings" to the claws. It irked me for some reason that they looked "bare" >__> Unfortunately I hate sanding so I printed it and built it with all the layer lines visible but I think it adds some charm.
Originally this was gonna be a simple print in all its basic colors but a trip to a local hobby shop had me reconsidering a weathering effect. Gundam markers work exceptionally well on PLA (yes, I used Gundam marker for everything except the black and blue parts .___.) and while I tried using Mr. Hobby Top Coat, I gave up and used Rust-oleum's matte finish (do you know how much it costs to get a small can of Mr. Hobby Top Coat?????? One can only covered enough for one singular layer D;).
The whole figure is articulated similarly to the HMM line. It can stand on its own and be posed in any position but I'm leaving it as is cause I don't know where to put it yet .___. This thing is huge D: Husband keeps telling me we don't have the room but I can hang this from the ceiling...I think?
I'm gonna work on the next zoid. Unfortunately the older models go for quite a bit. I've always wanted a Mad Thunder but those things are expensive as heck so I'm gonna model and 3D print my own.
